Civet Coffee (Luwak Kopi)
Bluegold’s first civet coffee farm is established in 2013, starting with a 4 acres coffee farm to a 160 acres plantation up in hills valley of Na Duang District in Loei Province. With our high standards and premium quality products, we have expanded our production to Pone Sawan District in Nakhon Phanom Province.
Nowadays, Bluegold Coffee is the largest Civet coffeefarm in Thailand with more than 200 cage-free civet cats and counting.
We have chosen Robusta beans from high altitude and started our farm on high altitude mountain in NorthEastern Thailand surrounding with high peak mountains and spectacular scenic views. We carefully and selectively picked our locations for our coffee farm that will provide great nutrition and rich sources for our beans. Moreover, our coffee farms are only located in the area that has no acidic soil problem.
Why Civet Coffee?
According to the study in ‘The Journal of Nutrition’, Civet coffee has shown a positive effect in reducing the chance of breast cancer, and the data shows that drinking civet coffee can help preventing skin cancer development up to 17%. Furthermore, civet coffee also minimizes the chance of developing oral cancer and diabetes.
Production; before Civet Coffee is served
Perfectly ripen coffee berries are picked and eaten by a civet for their fruit pulp. After spending about a day and a half in the civet’s digestive tract the beans are then defecated in clumps, having kept their shape and still covered with some of the fleshy berry’s inner layers. The civet’s stomach acids and enzymes digest the beans’ covering and ferment the beans. The “cherry” or endocarp surrounding the bean is not completely digested by the Civet cat, and after being collected, we thorough wash, remove the endocarp, and then roast the beans.
One of the most distinguish elements, which makes us unique, is our specially designed farm for Civet cats. We, at Bluegold Coffee, believe that great taste comes from the great combination of beans and healthy and happy Civet cats. We put our Civet cats in a cage-free range with a closedfarming system, where we let the cats roam free in the environment which is created to be as close as possible to their natural habitat.
Why Bluegold Coffee?
Nonetheless, we not only have a small barn where we raise cows for organic fertilizer, we also have horses in which we lend them to support a riding program for a local none-profit organization for Autistic kids.
